The American Cancer Society’s 2020 Making Strides Against Breast Cancer Houston event on Saturday, November 14 looked different from previous years, but participants and El Centro de Corazón volunteers were energized to celebrate survivors and raise funds for the fight to end breast cancer—safely.

Instead of the traditional walk, the event shifted to offer a virtual 5K that also featured a drive-thru celebration of breast cancer survivors to accommodate COVID-19 precautions and ensure everyone’s safety. Survivors and their families decorated their vehicles for the drive-thru celebration, and were greeted with cheers and swag bags.

The Survivor Drive Thru Celebration was held at CITYCENTRE Houston and 19 El Centro de Corazón staff members volunteered as the event’s Survivor Welcome Team, with Jorge Olvera, El Centro’s Community Engagement Manager, leading the group.

Founded in 1994, El Centro de Corazón provides bilingual healthcare services to underinsured and uninsured patients at its four health centers, including primary care, prenatal care, dental services and behavioral health services.
