Houston, Texas, November 19, 2019Blue Cross and Blue Shield of Texas (BCBSTX) awarded El Centro de Corazón a $75,000 grant through its Community Investment Initiative aimed at addressing social factors that impact health, such as access to healthcare services, transportation, safe housing, and economic opportunities.

“El Centro de Corazón has been fortunate to have BCBSTX as an impactful community partner over the years by supporting our children and families in Houston’s East End,” said CEO Marcie Mir. “Through the expansion of services, El Centro will increase access to behavioral health services to 4,200 low-income children and adults and will be able to provide care to students at local East End schools. Additionally, students and their family will have access to integrated health services at our El Centro locations.”

As a Community Investment grantee, El Centro aims to increase access to integrated medical and behavioral health services, as well as to implement school-based mental health services so that additional prevention, early intervention, and treatment services are available for students on school campuses. Integrated health services at El Centro are also accessible for students and their family, which will address the medical, behavioral, and health-related social needs of patients in the primary care setting, thereby improving individual outcomes and overall community health.
